I got interested in this film just like how everyone else did; the trailer told a story about an Asian girl who feels ill-fit in an American school, is brilliant in academics, has no friends and supports her dad by earning off of writing essays for her classmates. But one day, she is asked by a love-smitten guy to write a love letter to a girl he likes but thinks is above his station. And there were hints about the Asian girl falling for that girl in the course of pretending to write letters on the guy's behalf but pouring her own feelings out.
This is a very unique story, very intriguing, isn't it? But you cannot see the depth of an ocean from its surface, can you? The film is so much more than the juicy plot.
In the bleak town of Squahamish, Ellie (the Asian girl) and Aster (the American girl) are two lonely girls looking for something to untangle the knots in their lives. It's a high school story. [I'm in my mid-twenties and I am obsessed with coming-of-age stories. I can't see myself coming out of the the blue burning fire of youth, when one is in between figuring out what life means and what kind of life they want. Ellie is stuck in the town because of her father's job and Aster does not know what to do with her life. They have not yet met anybody who understands them, can guide them, can point towards the light at the end of the tunnel. Paul Munsky pops up, struck with the arrow of love, ready to put in all the effort to make Aster realise how much he (thinks he) loves her.
Aster and Ellie and Paul think they know love but the entanglement of their emotions confuses them and they all come out knowing they have seen too less of the world to be sure of anything at all. Everyone has their own definitions of love... which are marred by the other in the battleground. New lives emerge from the ashes of old antiquated obsolete thoughts. Kisses begin, hopes take shape and the train leaves. A new family is born, ready for a new adventure.

I felt so happy watching this scene. Super interested in the content, but the annoying, slow-paced narration and cheesy take just made it too difficult to endure and finish. I think Alexxis is type of very fun girl who talk a lot and have a big laugh everytime she get comfort with other people, and she dont mind to do silly things with her bff. shes kind of girl i wanna be with 🥰 omg i love her moreee. Like Alice Wu'a directorial debut, Saving Face, her subsequent feature The Half of It has great performances, thought provoking dialogue, and a beautiful story,message, and direction. The problem is all of that is ignored for a cheesy soap operaish third act and ending. Overall, I really enjoyed the film but thought the third act and the ending could have been done better.
